Age Checks – Arizona Youth Sports
Ensuring fair play and safety for all participants
Age Check Overview
In our Arizona Youth Sports leagues, we process thousands of registrations each season. Verifying birth certificates for every single player would require significant time and resources, which would delay league operations and increase costs for families.
For this reason, we operate on an honor system and trust that parents accurately enter their child’s birthdate (or grade) at registration. That said, player safety and fair competition remain extremely important to us.
Each season, we occasionally receive concerns from parents or coaches that a player may be older than the age/grade division in which they are registered. When a player is significantly older, it can create competitive imbalance and, in some cases, safety concerns for younger participants.
Age Check Requests
Parents and coaches are permitted to submit an Age Check Request if they believe a player may not meet the age or grade requirements for the division. When a request is submitted, the league will contact the player’s parent or guardian and request proof of birthdate (such as a birth certificate, passport, or other official identification). All requests are handled respectfully and confidentially.
How to Submit an Age Check Request
Age Check Requests may be submitted by texting or emailing the league. League contact information is available to all registered members. We ask that requests be made in good faith and based on legitimate concerns regarding age or grade eligibility.
If Your Child Is Being Age Checked
First, please do not be offended. In many cases, age checks occur because a player stands out physically or athletically compared to others in the division. Being asked for verification does not imply wrongdoing — it simply allows the league to confirm eligibility and ensure fairness and safety for all participants.
A league representative will contact you by text or email and request documentation verifying your child’s birthdate. Documentation can typically be submitted electronically. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and fair environment for all players.
If Proof of Age Is Not Provided
If a parent or guardian is unable or unwilling to provide proof of age, the matter will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. However, the standard outcome is that the player will be ineligible to participate for the remainder of the season unless age eligibility can be verified.
