Sample Practice Outlines

Last Updated: March 22, 2026

At AZ Youth Sports, we know that running an effective practice can make all the difference for young athletes. Our sample practice outlines give coaches an easy way to plan fun, organized, and skill-building sessions — whether you’re new to coaching or have years of experience.

Each outline is designed to help you:

  • Maximize practice time

  • Keep players engaged and active

  • Focus on skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship

  • Maintain a smooth flow from warm-ups to scrimmages

Typical practices include:

  1. Warm-Up (5–10 minutes) – Light jogging, stretching, and dynamic drills to get players ready.

  2. Skill Drills (15–25 minutes) – Focus on core skills such as passing, dribbling, shooting, or flag pulling.

  3. Team Concepts (10–15 minutes) – Introduce simple plays, positioning, and communication.

  4. Scrimmage or Game Situation (10–20 minutes) – Let players apply what they’ve learned in a fun, controlled game setting.

  5. Cool-Down & Review (5 minutes) – Wrap up with encouragement, hydration, and key takeaways.

Coaches can adapt these outlines for any sport — from soccer and basketball to flag football and baseball — and for any age group. By following a consistent structure, you’ll build confidence in your players, help them improve faster, and keep practices enjoyable for everyone.
